About CRN
Welcome to the Countryside Recreation Network (CRN) Website.
CRN is committed to exchanging and sharing information
to develop best policy and practice in countryside recreation.
The Internet and this website are part of this commitment.
Who we are: CRN is a network which:
• covers the UK and the Republic of
Ireland
• gives easy access to information on countryside
and related recreation matters
• reaches organisations and individuals in the public,
private and voluntary sectors
• networks thousands of interested people
CRN is funded by a range of Government
Departments, Agencies and other bodies who share an interest
in countryside recreation issues. To find out more about
the member agencies involved visit Sponsoring
Organisations on this site.
What we do: Research - Liaison
- Good Practice
The Network helps the work of Agencies and individuals in
three areas:
- Research:
To encourage co-operation between members in identifying and promoting
the need for research related to countryside recreation, to encourage
joint ventures in undertaking research, and to disseminate information
about members’ recreation programmes.
- Liaison:
To promote information exchange relating to countryside recreation, and
to foster general debate about relevant trends and issues.
- Good Practice:
To share information to develop best practice through training and professional
development in provision for and management of countryside recreation.
The current Chair of CRN is Geoff Hughes and he is supported
by John Watkins, Recreation Policy Officer (Section head),
Countryside Council for Wales as Vice-Chair, and Chris Gordon,
Recreation Specialist, Natural England as Finance Officer.
The Network is managed and run by the secretariat; Magali
Fleurot, Network Manager and Kim Haigh, Network Assistant.
The secretariat is based at Sheffield Hallam University.
